Three days after the electoral defeat of the CDU and the sweeping electoral triumph of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz (CDU) launched a fierce attack against the party in the Bundestag. During the general debate on the budget, he accused the AfD of "contempt for our democratic institutions." "You want to destabilize our country," declared the CDU leader. Earlier, AfD leader Alice Weidel, who was the first speaker in the debate, stated that, in her view, the CDU-SPD governing coalition has now reached its end. "The voters in Saxony-Anhalt made it crystal clear to you, in the language of the democratic sovereign people: The black-red coalition is finished," she stated. As she argued, citizens want a policy change rather than a continuation of the same course. "This continuation of the same policy and the return to business as usual amount to a declaration of surrender for your coalition," emphasized Alice Weidel. The German Chancellor asserted that the AfD will never secure an absolute majority in Germany.
The first confrontation between Merz and Weidel after the electoral earthquake
This marks the first direct political showdown between Merz and Weidel following the landslide victory of the AfD in the Saxony-Anhalt elections. The AfD more than doubled its 2021 percentage and emerged as the largest party with 43.8% of the vote. The AfD could now, with the support of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), form a government. However, it remains uncertain whether the BSW will agree to enter such a governing coalition. At the same time, the CDU suffered a heavy electoral defeat, losing nearly 20 percentage points and plummeting to 17.2%.
